During the 19th century, the area was known for its role in the ironmaking industry, with six iron facilities in Lincoln County in 1810. However, farming was the primary industry until textile mills arrived in the area.

Denver was originally known as “Dry Pond” because of a small pond in the area that would dry up in the summer heat. In 1873, the community changed its name to Denver after the capital city of Colorado, which was at the time being considered for entrance into the Union. In 1877, the community of Denver was incorporated as a North Carolina town, but it lost its incorporated status in 1971.
