Since 1990, the population of Huntersville has increased by 5,000 percent, jumping from 1,000 to more than 50,000 today. It is the 19th largest municipality in the state of North Carolina. With a number of beautiful natural areas and proximity to Charlotte, life in Huntersville provides a pleasant mix of outdoor recreation and bustling city living. Huntersville, along with the nearby towns of Davidson and Cornelius, is commonly called “North Meck”.
 
The Latta Plantation Nature Preserve is the largest green space in the county, hosting hiking and horse trails, boating and fishing access, and the Carolina Raptor Center. Huntersville is nestled along the southern shore of the expansive Lake Norman, providing a nearby destination for swimming, fishing, boating, and other water activities. Discovery Place Kids is a popular children’s museum in Huntersville. Annual events and festivals in Huntersville include the Huntersville Growers’ Market, Hello Huntersville, Halloween Fun, A Huntersville Christmas, and more. The town’s proximity to Charlotte puts a variety of employment opportunities within reach for residents, who may easily commute to Charlotte’s city center for work.

History

The area now known as Huntersville is rich with historical landmarks, such as the Historic Latta Plantation, an antebellum house with accessory buildings, farm animals, a garden, and interpreters in period clothing. North Carolina’s textile legacy left substantial marks on the history of Huntersville. The town was originally called Craighead but was renamed to Huntersville in 1873 to honor local cotton farmer Robert Boston Hunter. Virgin Manufacturing Company was a cotton mill and successful brickyard that came to Huntersville and fueled significant growth along the railroad line. The Hugh Torance House and Store, located on Gilead Road, opened in the 1770s and is the oldest surviving store in Mecklenburg County. This building is just one example of the many well-preserved historic relics in this rapidly evolving neighborhood.
